Bass Fishing Season 2008 for Queensland
Australian bass off limits
The closed season for Australian bass is in place throughout
Queensland from June 1 to August 31, 2008.
Senior fisheries management officer Anita Ramage, from the Department
of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F), said closed seasons were
vital to protect fish during vulnerable times such as spawning season.
"By following regulations and closed seasons, anglers help protect
fisheries resources for the future," Ms Ramage said.
"DPI&F needs support from anglers to allow fish to spawn and stocks
to replenish."
The good news for keen bass anglers is that there are exemptions from
the closed season, applicable to waterways upstream.
"Australian bass are a migratory species and head downstream to
estuarine spawning grounds."
"Where dams and weirs prevent fish from reaching the breeding
grounds, fish are unlikely to spawn and fishing in these listed areas is
permitted," Ms Ramage said.
Fishers have a choice of 16 dams that are already stocked with
Australian bass:
- Baroon Pocket
- Bjelke-Petersen
- Boondooma
- Borumba
- Cania
- Cressbrook
- Fred Haig (Lake Monduran)
- Gordonbrook
- Hinze
- Lenthalls
- Maroon
- Moogerah
- North Pine
- Somerset
- Wuruma
- Wivenhoe.
Other fishing locations include the Claude Wharton and Jones Weirs,
Isis Balancing Storage (Lake Gregory) and Lakes at Clarendon, Dyer (Bill
Gunn Dam) and MacDonald.
Ms Ramage reminded anglers that size and take and possession limits
still applied to those Australian bass taken from these dams and weirs.
She said the minimum size limit was 30cm and the take and possession
limit was two.
